Dreams of the Garden City (2018)

Dreams of the Garden City is a series of works aiming to reflect thoughts, emotions, hopes and dreams of living in our Garden City of Singapore. As there is a pleasantness in the primordial disposition of humans towards nature, they will be at their most tranquil state of mind in a setting of greenery, bringing out a relaxed quality to their actions and behaviour. I chose to depict such reflections through the local landscape setting of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, mostly of interactions between loved ones which subtly encompasses the thread of kinship and internal conversation between one another.

Employing a dreamlike style, I use lyrical impressionistic aesthetics to reflect on these fleeting and transitory moments, resulting in contemplative paintings with a narrative element. In these works, the living beings and environment form a harmonious whole interconnecting occupants and their spaces, with neither overtaking the other in the pictorial composition. With these, I hope to evoke in the viewer a sense of familiarity and nostalgia.
